Top 5 Dragon Themed Activities for Children

What would a fairy tale be without a mythical beast such as a dragon? These ferocious fire-breathers ignite the imagination and have been a source of fascination for centuries. If your little ones are obsessed with dragons, here are five dragon themed activities they might enjoy.

1. Baking Dragon Cookies

Children love getting the kitchen messy and having something to eat at the end of it. Baking is a great way to teach them new skills, and dragon cookies can be achieved with a simple recipe and a dragon-shaped cutter. Decorate with coloured icing and sugar eyeballs to make them come ‘alive.’ You can also use the prongs of a fork or the rounded edge of a teaspoon to create scale markings in the icing.

2. Make Dragon Eggs

For this activity, start by hard boiling eggs and cooling them in an ice bath. Next, lightly tap them with a spoon until cracks appear all over. Make sure the shell is cracked but still intact. The next step is to place about half a teaspoon of food colouring in a sealable bag. Drop the eggs inside and massage in the food colouring. Leave the eggs to dry for an hour. Finally, rinse the eggs, pat with a paper towel and peel to reveal the dragon egg pattern inside.

3. Head to the Theatre

When it comes to the best theatre shows for families, don’t miss Dragons & Mythical Beasts Live, showing this July at the Bristol Old Vic. You’ll get an introduction to a range of magical creatures, from the majestic unicorn to the Tooth Fairy. And of course, there’s a mythical beast you’ll have to be careful not to wake - the mighty dragon!

4. Enjoy a Dragon-Themed Story Time

Grab your dragon cookies, milk, blankets and teddies for the ultimate dragon story time. Some of the best dragon tales out there include Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin and How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell. You could even make up your own dragon story by sitting in a circle and asking someone to start the story off. The person next to them then adds a line and so on until everyone has had a turn. Keep going until the story comes to a dramatic conclusion.

5. Set up a Dragon Egg Hunt

Decorate polystyrene eggs so that they look like colourful dragon eggs. Hide them around the garden and ask the kids to find them. The person with the most eggs wins a prize. You could make this even more exciting by placing mini glow sticks in plastic eggs and doing the hunt after dark. Or, pop a clue in the first egg that leads to the next.

Family shows such as Dragons & Mythical Beasts offer interactive fun like no other and give children a fantastic introduction to live theatre. With intricate puppetry, a talented cast and an imaginative story, kids aged three and up will love this unique production. Book your tickets today and join in the fun.
