4 unicorn craft activities for kids

Mythical creatures and beasts have been fascinating adults and kids alike for centuries, and unicorns are often a firm favourite among little girls. If you have children that love unicorns and you’re looking for some crafting activities to keep them busy this summer, here are some ideas.

1. Paper plate unicorn

This simple craft is ideal for younger children and only requires a paper plate, some craft paper, scissors and glue. Cut out a horn and two ears from the craft paper, and glue them to the plate. Then cut some thin strips of craft paper to make the mane and glue those to the front of the plate. Add some googly eyes and cut a circle of pink paper to stick on beneath them for the nose. Draw on the nostrils and mouth and you have a unicorn friend to play with!

2. Unicorn mask

For this activity you’ll need coloured card, a paper straw, scissors and glue. Cut a mask shape from white card to fit your child’s face and make eye holes that they’ll be able to see through. With black card, cut an outline of the top side of the eye and add lashes, then stick along the top line of the eye. Cut out ears and stick to the top of the mask, then add a horn and some coloured card for the mane. Finally, glue the straw to the side of the mask.

3. Unicorn sewing

Sewing is a great activity for school age children, helping them to hone fine motor skills. A unicorn friend can be made with some felt, a needle and thread, and some stuffing. Begin by folding a piece of white felt in half and drawing a basic unicorn shape onto it. Cut out the shape so that you have two separate pieces of felt. Stitch them together, leaving an opening at the bottom. Add the stuffing through the opening and sew it up. Now you can decorate it as you like, with googly eyes, coloured wool or felt for the mane and tail, and anything else you like.

4. Unicorn pencil holder

This activity is a great way to recycle a used tin can, and can be adapted for other mythical beasts if your kids prefer. Along with your tin can you’ll need white paper or card, coloured paper, scissors, glue and a black marker. Start by cutting your white paper to the right width and length to cover your can. Tape it on and then cut a horn in your preferred colour. Stick this on. You may also want to add flowers or strips of paper for a mane. Finally, draw on eyes and ears with the black marker.
